About EPT

Emergency Physicians of Tidewater (EPT) is a physician-owned, democratic group of over 200 physicians and advanced practice providers. We deliver high-quality emergency care across seven hospitals and emergency departments throughout the Hampton Roads region of Virginia.

Training Overview

New graduate Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) begin their EPT career with a comprehensive 12-week orientation that includes 35–40 supervised clinical shifts, hands-on procedural skills labs, and a focused lecture series covering core topics in Emergency Medicine. This foundational training is designed to build clinical confidence, reinforce critical decision-making skills, and prepare APPs for success in the fast-paced emergency department environment.

Basic Training

Our Orientation Program is thoughtfully designed to help newly hired Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) build confidence and competence in emergency medicine. The program combines classroom instruction, hands-on procedural labs, and approximately 12 weeks of mentored clinical shifts alongside experienced providers.

Focus Care / Fast Track Training

After completing orientation, Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) transition into our Focus Care/Fast Track training—typically within the first six months. This phase is designed to help APPs establish their clinical rhythm by enhancing efficiency, refining procedural skills, improving documentation and billing practices, and promoting a sustainable work-life balance.

As part of this progression, all APPs participate in our 2-day Focus Care Boot Camp within their first year. This interactive training connects providers directly with local specialists to review and discuss common emergency department presentations. It’s an opportunity to ask practical, real-world clinical questions, gain expert insights, and further strengthen patient care skills in a collaborative, supportive environment.

Advanced Training

Main Treatment Area Longitudinal Training Program (LTP)

The EPT APP Longitudinal Training Program (LTP) is a year long, advanced clinical development program designed to support Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) transitioning from caring for low-to-moderate acuity patients to managing higher-acuity cases in the emergency department (ED).

This structured program bridges the gap by combining focused clinical education with hands-on experience. Participants engage in monthly case-based learning sessions centered on high-acuity topics, attend multiple simulation lab training days, and complete one-on-one clinical shifts under the supervision of experienced attending physicians.

Completion of the LTP program reflects a significant professional milestone. All graduates are required to sit for the Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) exam in Emergency Medicine—demonstrating their advanced knowledge, skills, and readiness to provide high-level emergency care.

EPT - Katelyn Watson

Katelyn Watson, PA-CSPAH SITE LEAD

Katelyn is a certified physician assistant with deep roots in the Virginia Beach community. She was born and raised here in VB. Before attending PA school, she volunteered with the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad for 5 years, where she discovered her passion for patient care and emergency medicine.

A proud Hokie, Katelyn earned her undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech before completing her PA training with a Masters at Eastern Virginia Medical School. She chose to remain in Hampton Roads to give back to the community that shaped her. She is dedicated to providing compassionate, patient-centered care to every individual she serves.

When she’s not caring for patients, Katelyn enjoys spending time with family, camping, collecting seaglass and jewelry making.

Stacy, Whitney - SLH Site Lead

Whitney Stacy, PA-CSLH SITE LEAD

Whitney Stacy earned her Master of Physician Assistant Studies from Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in 2019, followed by completion of the EVMS Emergency Medicine Fellowship in conjunction with Emergency Physicians of Tidewater (EPT) in 2020.

She has served as the Lead PA at Sentara Leigh Emergency Department since 2022. Beyond her leadership at Sentara Leigh, Whitney also leads special projects for EPT, including the creation of a mentorship program and the rollout of a structured performance review process designed to support professional growth and excellence.

Before entering medicine, Whitney earned a master’s degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and spent five years in public sector human capital consulting, where she held leadership roles focused on workforce development and organizational strategy. She brings this unique blend of clinical expertise and organizational leadership to her work, with a passion for building high-performing teams and advancing patient care.

EPT - Hailey Reid, PA

Hailey Reid, PA-COPT LEAD

Hailey Reid graduated from EVMS in 2020 and worked Pulmonary Critical Care for 3 years during COVID before transitioning to EPT/OPT 2023. Her clinical interests include autoimmune disorders and critical care management including advanced procedures.

Hailey is passionate about teaching patients to understand their medical conditions to improve their health and fellow colleagues to help advance their medical knowledge.

EPT - Adam Nyarady

Adam Nyarady, PA-CSI SITE LEAD

Adam is a Physician Associate specializing in Emergency Medicine. He earned his PA degree in 2009 from Albany Medical College and completed his undergraduate studies at SUNY Cortland in New York. He has been working for Emergency Physicians of Tidewater since 2010 and he currently serves as the site lead PA at Sentara Independence emergency department.

Adam was born and raised in New York but has been residing in Virginia Beach since joining Emergency Physicians at Tidewater in 2010.

Outside of his professional life, he enjoys cooking, camping, beach life, and sailing.

EPT - Lynne Maka (Web)

Lynne Maka, PA-CSOH SITE LEAD

Lynne Maka is a certified physician assistant who has dedicated her career to emergency medicine. She earned her Master of Physician Assistant degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2016 and went on to complete an emergency medicine fellowship with the Emergency Physicians of Tidewater and EVMS from 2016-2017.

Since then, Lynne has worked alongside her fellow APPs and attendings with the Emergency Physicians of Tidewater. She has been an overnight provider since 2021, and she also serves as the Lead Advanced Practice Provider for Sentara Obici’s emergency department since 2020.

Lynne is passionate about providing high-quality, patient-centered care in moments of crisis. She is equally committed to supporting her colleagues, fostering teamwork, and helping create an environment where both providers and patients feel supported.

Kannan, Grace - SNGH Site Lead

Grace Kanaan, PA-C, CAQ-EMSNGH SITE LEAD

Grace serves as the Site Lead Physician Assistant at Norfolk General’s Emergency Department, where she oversees clinical operations, supports provider development, and ensures high-quality, patient-centered emergency care. With advanced training and certification in emergency medicine, Grace brings a deep commitment to both clinical excellence and team leadership.

Grace holds a Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience from Oberlin College, a Master’s in Medical Physiology from Case Western Reserve University, and a Master’s in Physician Assistant Studies from Mary Baldwin University. Additionally, she is certified with a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Emergency Medicine, reflecting her specialized expertise and dedication to the field.

Grace is passionate about clinical education, mentoring future providers, and continuously improving care delivery in the emergency setting.

EPT - Nate Branson (Web)

Nate Branson, PA-CSBLH SITE LEAD

Nate Branson is a graduate of the EVMS Physician Assistant program and specializes in Emergency Medicine, with experience in Surgical Oncology and General Surgery. He has a strong focus on prehospital care and trauma medicine, with significant experience in managing acute trauma, critical illness, and providing comprehensive patient care.

He is committed to advancing clinical knowledge and improving outcomes in the emergency department and prehospital environments, with a particular interest in tactical medicine. He serves as lead Physician Assistant at Sentara Belle Harbour, and enjoys volunteering his time teaching and collaborating with law enforcement and military medical professionals.

Batty, Travis - SVBGH Site Lead

Travis Batty, PA-CSVBGH SITE LEAD

Travis Batty has been with EPT since graduating from EVMS in 2020. He is currently the Lead APP at the Virginia Beach General Hospital Emergency Department as well as the Lead Instructor for EPT’s ACLS and BLS program.

Travis completed EPT’s Main Treatment Area Longitudinal Program in 2023 and holds his Certificate of Added Qualifications in Emergency Medicine (CAQ-EM).

Prior to becoming a Physician Assistant, Travis was in the US Army with multiple deployments before getting out in 2013 where he became a Firefighter/Paramedic. He currently serves as a PA in the Virginia Army National Guard.

Gina Martinette, PA-CPEER SUPPORT REPRESENTATIVE

Gina Martinette is a graduate of Kettering College Physician Assistant Program. Immediately following graduation, she accepted a job with EPT where she has worked for the past 3 years.

Gina is a dedicated member of the EPT team, working as a trainer, member of Peer Support Committee, and a recent graduate of the MTA Longitudinal Program. She has a special interest in caring for the geriatric population, viewing this as one of the greatest privileges of working in healthcare.

In her free time, Gina is an avid runner, hiker, thrifter, and crafter. She can be found attending local run clubs, lounging on the beach, or spending time with her family, friends, and cats.

Gabby Gauthier, PA-CPEER SUPPORT REPRESENTATIVE

Gabby Gauthier graduated from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2020 and has been practicing at EPT since then. With a strong commitment to clinical excellence and mentorship, she has been a member of the training team guiding and supporting new hire physician assistants.

As part of the inaugural class of the Main Treatment Area Longitudinal Training Program, she completed additional training to manage more complex acute patients as well as critical procedures. She then earned a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Emergency Medicine (CAQ-EM). In 2024, Gabby joined the Peer Support Committee, reflecting a continued dedication to fostering a positive and supportive workplace culture.

She was also voted APP of the Year for 2024 by her peers. In addition to clinical work, Gabby is a community faculty member of EVMS participating in admissions interviews, guest lecturing, and supporting the education of current PA students.

EPT - Lizzie Crockett

Lizzie Crockett, PA-CPRECEPTOR DIRECTOR

With a strong foundation in clinical medicine, Lizzie graduated from the prestigious Shenandoah University PA Program in 2011, followed by the completion of the EVMS Fellowship in Emergency Medicine in 2012. Since then, she has been a dedicated member of the EPT team, specializing in high-acuity care in the fast-paced environment of the MTA, where she has worked night shifts for the past 12 years.

In 2021, Lizzie assumed the position as Director of EPT’s PA Student Preceptorship Program, where she has mentored over 300 students from 15 different PA schools. This rigorous, hands-on training has become a key part of EPT’s commitment to developing the next generation of healthcare providers.

Clinically, Lizzie has a deep passion for managing acute respiratory failure, septic shock, and performing advanced medical procedures. Outside of her critical care expertise, she is devoted to educating patients, helping them understand their conditions, and empowering them with preventative strategies to improve their long-term health outcomes.

EPT - James McMullen (Web)

James McMullen, PA-CASSOCIATE TRAINING DIRECTOR

James McMullen graduated from EVMS in 2017 and has been with EPT since August of that year. For the past four years, he has primarily served as a night-time provider at Sentara Princess Anne. His clinical interests focus on acute cardiac issues.

James currently leads the New Hire Training program for APPs in the Emergency Department, viewing this as a significant opportunity to pass on his knowledge and ensure excellent patient care.

Zane Shuck, MDAPP DIRECTOR

Dr. Zane Shuck is the APP Physician Director for Emergency Physicians of Tidewater (EPT), leading a team of more than 95 Advanced Practice Providers. He oversees recruitment, scheduling, education, and strategic planning with a focus on building a supportive culture and ensuring APPs are equipped to deliver excellent emergency care.

In addition to his leadership role at EPT, Dr. Shuck serves as the Operational Medical Director for several local EMS agencies, the Medical Director for the Paramedic Program at Tidewater Community College, and an assistant professor of Emergency Medicine at Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University (ODU).

EPT - Chris Beach Portrait

Chris Beach, PA-CAPP LEAD

Chris Beach is a graduate of the Duke University Physician Assistant Program and has been a valued member of Emergency Physicians of Tidewater (EPT) since 2017. He currently serves as the Lead Physician Assistant, a role he assumed in 2023, following four years as EPT’s Director of Training.

Before becoming a PA, Chris served six years on active duty as a U.S. Navy SEAL and Combat Medic, completing two combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. His military background continues to fuel his passion for serving the veteran and military community.

Chris is deeply committed to clinical education, leadership development, and the advancement of the PA profession.
